PAMPLONA ALTA
Pamplona Alta is a pueblo joven or “young town,” one of the ring of shantytowns that surround the capital city of Lima and extend into the foothills of the Andes. They are home to thousands of people, many displaced from rural lands by terrorism or economic privation. In Pamplona Alta, as in much of Peru, living conditions are harsh and people struggle with severe shortages of food, water, medicines and housing. Political instability, economic uncertainty, and lack of work threaten the fabric of daily life. Since 1977 women have been making cuadros in Pamplona Alta. Their handiwork helps to support their families.
