AYACUCHO - TRADITION AND CRISIS IN THE POPULAR ART OF PERU

Ayacucho - Tradition and Crisis in the Popular Art of Peru presents 24 panel paintings depicting the invasion of the terrorist group Sendero Luminoso into the small Andean town of Sarhua. These paintings give first-hand observations by the artists of the Asociación de Artistas Populares de Sarhua and contain texts identifying the disturbing political and military events depicted in each painting. Retablos (wood boxes with three-dimensional scenes, reminiscent of traveling devotional altars) by three brothers of the Blanco Bautista family and by Nicario Jimenez, all of Ayacucho, depict parallel events in other parts of Peru. A series of weavings by Edwin Sulca symbolizes the grief and anguish of that time of terror. For examples of work, see artists from Ayacucho. An interpretive brochure accompanies this exhibition.
