BANDITS & HEROES, POETS & SAINTS - POPULAR ART FROM THE NORTHEAST OF BRAZIL

The northeast of Brazil is permeated with a spirit of faith and belief. Colonial Portuguese came with a strong belief in Catholicism and established elaborate churches in the new world. Africans of many nations brought their own religious beliefs, which gave rise in Bahia to the African-Brazilian religion of Candomblé. These two great religious traditions have lived side-by-side, each influencing and resisting the practices of the other. The story of their persistence and their permeation of daily life is evident in their ceremonies and told through photographs, paintings and religious objects.
