BANDITS & HEROES, POETS & SAINTS - POPULAR ART FROM THE NORTHEAST OF BRAZIL

Bandits & Heroes introduces the complex mixture of African, European and Amerindian influences that together have created the story of the northeast of Brazil. Beginning in the 16th century and for more than three hundred years, Portuguese colonizers brought enslaved Africans to work in fields, construct cities, and labor in mines. Despite the hardships of slavery, Africans brought with them to the new world a complex and rich worldview that influenced every aspect of daily life and helped to create the unique culture of today’s Northeast.
