Son of religious pilgrims who came to Juazeiro do Norte as followers of Padré Cícero, Abraão is a retired professor of biophysics and an accomplished poet, sculptor, printmaker, ceramic artist. Enchanted as a boy by his mother’s tales of the Northeast, Abraão Batista today draws on rich folk traditions as well as contemporary politics as a source for his poetry and prints. For more than three decades, he has been a leading spokesman for literatura de cordel and is proud that his son, Hamurabi, is carrying the tradition forward to a new generation.
