Amaro Francisco Borges and his brother, José (J. Borges), are among the best-known poet/artists of the Northeast. Living their entire lives in and around the small town of Bezerros, Pernambuco, the Borges brothers enjoy international popularity for their literatura de cordel (literally “literature on a string”), small, hand-printed pamphlets of rhymed verse with block-printed covers, traditionally clipped to strings and sold in rural markets and fairs. Today, Amaro and J. Borges and their sons and nephews carry forward this folk tradition and also create larger-scale prints depicting folk themes of the Northeast.
