As a youngster, José Lorenço began working as an errand boy at one of the Northeast’s oldest publishers of literatura de cordel, Lira Nordestina, located in Juazeiro do Norte. It was through his work there that José learned to read and had an opportunity to try his hand at woodblock printmaking. Today, José Lorenço enjoys respect as a gifted printmaker and knowledgeable local historian. He carefully researches the local history that he portrays in his prints. José has created two significant series of prints documenting the lives and works of Padré Cícero and the famous poet/singer, Patativa de Asaré.
