One of the few sculptors in Cachoeira not related to the family of Louco and Malouco, Mimo has a small atelier near the center of town. He remembers being fascinated by the sculptures of Louco as a child and encouraged by Louco’s son, Celestino, to try carving. Mimo worked in the atelier of Dory for a number of years as an apprentice and helper to learn the craft, finally opening his own studio in 1998. The themes of Mimo’s carvings reflect his African Brazilian heritage and draw on the rich spiritual traditions from Africa still strong in Cachoeira.
