Dory is the son of a leather-worker and nephew of Cachoeira’s famous barber/sculptor, Louco. As a young man, Dory spent a few years running tavern in Salvador but, at the encouragement of his older brother Doidão, returned to Cachoeira in 1976 to establish an atelier for woodcarving where he has worked ever since. He uses native woods and roots of trees to carve figures of the orixás, the saints, and images dealing with slavery and the black experience in Bahia. A generous person, Dory has been a mentor to young artists who have worked in Cachoeira, including Maike and Mimo.
