A native of Cachoeira, Fory worked as a youngster as a local guide and as an assistant sweeping floors for the famous barber/sculptor, Bonaventura Santos Filho (known as Louco). Fory loved Louco’s carved wood caricatures of local characters and, with Louco’s encouragement, began to carve wood himself – thus beginning at an early age the activity that was to become his life’s vocation. One of very few Cachoeira wood-carvers not directly related to Louco, Fory has developed a distinctive sinuous style which he uses in his well-known portrayals of the female figure.
