Maurício was born and grew up in Juazeiro do Norte on Rua Domingo Salvio. His father worked in the fields and was a shoemaker. When he was old enough, Mauricio began helping his father in the fields. He also learned to work in leather and to help his father make shoes. Although Maurício stopped working in leather, he continued to makes things by hand – particularly things of tin, frequently crafted from scrap tin and recycled cans. Today, he makes beautifully crafted lanterns and other objects of tin which he sells at the Centro de Cultura Popular Mestre Noza.
