João Cosmo Félix, NINO, was born in Juazeiro do Norte, and became an important influence in the development of popular art in the Northeast. He lived and worked with his wife, Perpétua Celia da Conceição, who is also a wood sculptor. Starting around 1956, Nino approached his work with creativity and imagination. Some of his best-known themes are fish, birds, Mateus, hunters, elephants, monkeys, all in painted wood.
