WAL-BA
Wal-ba attended the University of Brasilia where he earned a degree in Philosophy and studied sociology and psychology before returning to Salvador and the Pelourinho in 1884. Himself a painter, he was influential in early attempts to organize the popular artists of the Pelourinho and he helped to create the Association of Popular Artists of the Centro Histôrico in 1985. He has continued to paint and is also a champion of marginalized artists whose work he has brought to public attention through exhibitions and publications.
